About

Green Energy City is a Minecraft world that introduces and familiarizes students with battery technology and solar power. A series of puzzles, minigames and build activities provides a fun and engaging way of learning key concepts of sustainable energy. The world is available to download for free through the Minecraft Marketplace, and there is a classroom version for Minecraft Education, accompanied by lesson plans.

Overview

Battery Lesson 0: Welcome to the Battery Lab!

The Battery Lab

Start here to get an introduction to batteries: learn about their history, key components, and how they work.

Battery Lesson 2

The Battery Zone

Learn about the different types of batteries, the flow of current, and series and parallel circuits.

Solar Build 1

The Solar Zone

Follow the path of a photon from the sun to a solar panel, and discover how it can be turned into electricity.

Hydrogen Lesson 3 – Move that Hydrogen

The Hydrogen Zone

Learn how an electrolyzer works, travel the path of a hydrogen molecule through a fuel cell.

Learning Objectives

The Battery Lab provides an overview of the basics of battery technology, whilst the Battery and Solar Zones each contain 5 different activities to develop and test students’ knowledge.

Free Lesson Plans

We have prepared 11 lesson plans that teachers and parents can use to teach their learners about sustainable energy. These lesson plans are available for free download from the Minecraft Education website.

Lesson plan preview 2000px

In this lesson, students explore the history of batteries, the components of a battery, and how batteries work.

In this lesson, students learn about the flow and role of electrons in a battery. In the activity, students complete the journey of an electron from anode to cathode.

In this lesson, students explore the different types of batteries in use today and the advantages and disadvantages of each. They apply what they’ve learned about the various types of batteries in a matching activity.

In this lesson, students explore and learn to calculate volts, watts, and amps in batteries. They also learn differences between series and parallel circuits.

In this lesson, students use battery packs representing different battery capacities to balance a scale with a given battery capacity amount.

In this build activity, students will construct a cross-section of a battery. They must determine the flow of electrons from anode to cathode and label the parts of the battery and the path of the electrons.

In this build activity, students learn how energy storage facilities harvest their energy from renewable sources such as the wind and sun. They exercise their creativity by building a charging station that uses clean energy (solar panels) and is aesthetically pleasing.

In this lesson, students learn about renewable and non-renewable energy sources. They will gain an understandng of the benefits and drawbacks of the various energy sources and when each should be used.

In this lesson, students take a trip from the sun to a solar panel and beyond by interacting with photons and electrons in the game. They will discover common misconceptions about solar energy and gain an understanding of Earth’s energy budget (absorption vs. reflection).

In this lesson, students learn about the process of mining raw materials used in the creation of solar panels and the proper construction of solar panels.

In this lesson, students learn about how the placement of solar panels affects the panel’s energy output.

In this build activity, students learn how solar energy gets from the sun to Earth and design a model in Minecraft that demonstrates how solar energy is converted into electricity and stored in a battery.

In this lesson, students learn how an electrolyzer works to create hydrogen through electrolysis.

In this lesson, students become a “hydrogen molecule” and travel the path of a hydrogen molecule through a fuel cell.

In this lesson, the students discover the hydrogen distribution pipeline and the various stages it goes through from production to usage.

In this lesson, students take their knowledge of green energy, circuits, and sustainable design to build a green hydrogen production and distribution station.
